Gauhati HC allows IFF's intervention application in petition challenging the constitutionality of internet shutdown rules #KeepItOn

At a hearing dated January 31, 2022, IFF's intervention application challenging the Telecom Suspension Rules, 2017 has been allowed by the Gauhati High Court, and IFF has been impleaded in the case. IFF is now allowed to assist the Court with oral and written submissions in the proceedings.

We filed RTI applications to determine the extent of the Rajasthan government’s compliance with directions in Anuradha Bhasin. We have received a response from the Jaipur DC, who issued 30 Internet shutdown orders, which follow an identical copy, cut, paste format — same as Udaipur!

We filed Right to Information applications to determine the extent of compliance with directions in Anuradha Bhasin. We found that the office of the Udaipur Divisional Commissioner has issued 26 internet shutdown orders, most of which are similar!

The internet cannot be suspended in entire districts to prevent cheating in exams - IFF writes to the Rajasthan Government.

IFF writes to the officers of the Rajasthan Government expressing concerns about the unlawful, unnecessary, disproportionate and improperly ordered internet shutdowns on September 26, 2021, purportedly ordered to prevent cheating in the Rajasthan Eligibility Exam for Teachers 2021.

Ahead of its visit to J&K, IFF apprised the Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT of repeated internet shutdowns

We addressed a letter to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology, travelling to Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). The letter highlighted that the government was shutting down the internet in J&K without complying with the Supreme Court’s directions in Anuradha Bhasin vs Union of India.

Internet shutdown in Meghalaya without suspension order!

Since August 15, 2021, internet services have been suspended in four districts of Meghalaya due to ongoing civil unrest. We wrote to the Meghalaya government to publish all orders related to the current internet shutdowns as well as proactively publish any subsequent internet shutdown orders.
